Hello!
Thanks to Ned, Chari and Felix I was able to make it to the wonderful area to volunteer. My experience while there was very incredible and I am amazed when i think about it and how spectacular of an area and community it is. I have a feeling I will be back someday,Hopefully!
Jumping into the volunteer program there was pretty difficult for me at first because it was my first destination in Ecuador and my level of spanish was certainly that of a begginner. I would still reccomend this to anyone who does not speak spanish well but you will possibly not feel sure about what is going on and feel a bit isolated in not being able to express yourself clearly, I sure did!
The program is pretty open ended here and is really what you make it and how involved you care to get with the community and family you live with.
My experience of teaching in the school was really rough for me having very little experience teaching, not speaking spanish well, and the teachers were happy to give me the class and go about doing their own thing that needs to get done. I dont think this is the usual operation for all of the schools but I would reccomend taking these things into consideration before teaching in the schools. But on the other hand the kids enjoy your company so much and their parents as well that it is a very rewarding experience. You will feel very connected to the community, its really a positive thing!
Other than that I did farm work with a family close to neds house and had such a great time with the family and working in the feilds. you will get an authentic experience of a daily life of a rural farming family.
I suggest you try this out, Thanks Ned!

Volunteering was the aim of our recent trip to South America and, as a result, we spent a great deal of time researching the volunteering opportunities both from home and upon arrival. Many of the programs cost a huge amount of money and yet they provide very little in the way of help. These organisations make huge profits rather than giving the money to those they claim to be helping. They also give the volunteers work that is completely unnecessary because the program doesn’t actually rely upon volunteers to function. So many of the volunteers we met during our travels had experienced volunteering programs like this, as did we. The volunteering program provided by Ned in Intag is NOT one of those programs. The cost of the program is very little, with the price being set at the amount that it costs for the host family to provide both food and accommodation to the volunteers. The money is also paid directly to your host family so you know exactly where it’s going. Furthermore, without the volunteers the children aren’t taught English as there are no English teachers at the schools. The reason why I’ve mention the above point is because there is nothing worse than going somewhere where you hope to help and make a difference; only to find out that it’s a scam or you’re not really needed.

We spent roughly ten weeks living with a family in Rosario and I have to say that they are some of the most caring, friendly and generous people I have ever met. Their way of life is very different to what we are used to and the family provided us with many new experiences. One day we walked for a few hours to get to the best place to pick blackberries. On another we picked beans that grew on a corn crop on the side of a steep hill. We also learned the process involved in making baskets – collecting the vines, splitting and shaving them and the actual weaving itself. Picture this; sitting on the lounge room floor, listening to music, drinking beer and weaving baskets in rural Ecuador. Not an experience I ever thought I’d have.

During our time with the family we introduced them to a few new things too, such as making pizza and playing cards. We also taught them about our culture and way of life and exchanged stories. Although there was a language barrier, our Spanish being only basic when we first arrived, we were still able to communicated and understand what the family were saying (mostly). This was especially true of one of the family members who uses a lot of hand gestures and actions when speaking.

We also taught English at the local school, which due to our lack of Spanish was a little difficult at times, but hugely rewarding and a lot of fun. For the younger children, who were still learning to read and write Spanish, it was a lot easier to draw something or point at something and teach them the English word for it – rather than getting them to write it down. The older children who had a better knowledge of English, thanks to the volunteers that came before us, really enjoyed to test that knowledge by playing games.

For someone that is considering volunteering here there are a few helpful things that I can tell you; firstly, gumboots/wellingtons/rubber boots (whatever you want to call them) can come in really handy as it does get quite muddy if it has been raining – you can bring a pair with you or buy some in Cuellaje. Secondly, if you have to have access to the internet on a regular basis it might be better to ask Ned to place you with a family close to or in Cuellaje. We walked into Cuellaje from Rosario a few times without any problems at all, but it does take a lot of time – meaning that’s less time you’re spending with your family on their farm or at one of the school. Alternatively, you could catch the school truck or milk truck into Cuellaje in the morning and the school truck back in the afternoon – but again this still takes a lot of time. Thirdly, bring wet weather gear. If the sun is out there isn’t a problem with drying clothes, the problem is when it’s not or when it starts to rain when your clothes are on the line. Furthermore, it is a rural farming area meaning there are bugs, some of which bite – so bring some insect repellent with you. Additionally, if you decide to teach English at one of the schools, you might consider bringing some paper with you, as the children sometimes forget their books, and also a whiteboard marker. Lastly, if you ever have any problems or questions ask Ned (aka Edwardo) he is always available to help or chat. It’s also a great idea to spend a night or two at Ned’s so you can discuss with him exactly what you want out of the program – this will allow him to place you in the right area with a family that will better suit you. Plus you’ll get to meet his lovely dog Benji. Additionally, it can be better to stay the night in Cuellaje and catch the milk truck up to Ned’s in the morning, rather than in the afternoon, as this means you won’t risk doing some of the walk in the dark.

Our time in Rosario was an extremely worthwhile and amazing experience; there is nothing more we could have asked for. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank both Ned and our lovely family for making it everything that it was. Hopefully we’ll be back to visit one day soon.

My partner and I have spent 2 1/2 weeks volunteering at Finca San Antonio, and can highly recommend the experience! Eduardo has been great in setting us up and orientating us, we have a great family to stay with who look after us well and always have fresh juice and steaming bowls of soup on the table when we arrive home. They are full of stories and our rather basic Spanish (though even this helps tremendously!) has gone from strength to strength.

The Intag valley is beautiful. There are waterfalls to swim under, hills to ride across and everyone is friendly and helpful. Cuellaje itself is a pretty forward thinking community, aware of the impact farming is having on the cloud forest and open to new ways of doing things. The plans for a recycling centre and ecotourism development are proof of this. The community is a farming community and therefore widespread, however Sundays are a great day when everyone meets, socialises and collects supplies in the town.

We have been able to help in a number of ways: teaching English at the village school, offering advice on the construction of a new waste management centre and accompanying the park ranger on patrols and inspections of the nature reserve which protects remaining areas of cloud forest. The volunteer programme is extremely flexible and its up to the individual to get involved and contribute to the community, but in my opinion this is one of the strengths of the programme – you are free to choose how you can best contribute and if you are motivated and possess useful skills (teaching, engineering, ecology..) you will not be short of things to do!

If it were not for upcoming commitments we would be staying longer!

A few tips:
- take water treatment tablets

I landed in Ecuador about a month back, anxious, worried. I had come a long long way from my country, India, and was coming to South America for the first time. I had heard and read things about South America not being the safest place (was more worried since I was a single woman traveller). I landed at Quito at 11 PM and it took 2 hours to clear immigration and I was finally out of the airport at 1AM! All this while I was hoping that Chari and Felix were there at the airport to pick me up safely.

As it turned out, I need not have worried one little bit – as I got of the airport Felix was standing with a placard with my name and I will remember his face, as he stood there, for a long time. Actually, the two of them were worried about me too as I was one of the last ones to come out.

Chari and Felix are this wonderful couple who recieve volunteers at Quito and at their wonderful house there. I stayed with them for 2 days and had a wonderful time and the best start to my stay in Ecuador (and South America). Felix is an artist and musician and Chari is a great cook. She was even kind enough to come with me to the bus station to see me off in the bus to Intag.

I arrived safe and sound in Intag and now have been here over 4 weeks. Time has flown by and I have enjoyed every single day thoroughly. Cuellaje and the people here are special. Cuellaje is the main village in the Parroquia here and there are 6 other communities in the Parroquia. Cuellaje lies in the valley and is surounded by lush green mountains. In the mornings and evenings, clouds descend over the mountains and make a beautiful sight. I have made many new friends and met some incredible people here. I taught English at the school in Cuellaje to kids aged 7 – 11 and had a wonderful experience. Its unfortunate however that they do not have a teacher to continue the lessons.

Its now time for me to leave Intag but I leave with a heavy heart and with wonderful wonderful memories of the people, the place and everything else.

Just like Sandra, I studied cultural anthropology (=ethnology) and in Itang I was doing (my second) research for my thesis paper. I was living with Chari and Fernando, a family of five that lives a long way out from Cuellaje. Despite the economic hardships they face they are trying to protect a 45 ha primary rain forest that they own. My goal was to better understand the motivations and conflicts around this project that influence their everyday life. I think for the short time I had there I had a successful research and most definitely some of the best weeks ever. The people in Cuellaje are extremly nice, always very interested and helpful. I can only encourage anyone who wants to do research or just get to know a different lifestyle, to give it a chance in Cuellaje!

Hi,

I would recomend spending some time working with Intagtour to anybody, if you decide to go there I can guarantee you a memorable experience!

I was there from December 2010 to March 2011 – the rainy season! I thought I knew all about rain as I live in the North West of England but I was soon proved wrong! The mornings were lovely, very warm but every day around 2pm it would start to rain heavily and this usually lasted until the next morning. As you would expect because of this there was a lot of mud, very deep mud! The nights could be cold, so along with waterproof gear I would recomend taking warm clothes for the evenings. Some of the houses are poorly maintained and/or have poor quality roof tiles so acouple of times I was woken by a splash of water on my face or the unpleasant and “thought provoking” experience of rolling over onto a damp patch! The family I lived with though were very proactive at fixing these leaks so I managed to live with it. Towards the end of my time we were starting to see landslides because of the rain and this could make travel around the village difficult, and the 4 hr bus ride to Otavalo potentially dangerous (although in the 3 months I was there I never saw or heard of any accidents). Ned says though that at the moment it is very hot and dry and they havent had rain in a while. I lived with a local family, who took me in and treated me like one of their own, the friendlyness and hospitality you can expect there is unbelievable from all the villagers. It will help that you can speak Spanish, by the time you leave its possible you could be fluent. I myself didnt speak a word of Spanish when I arrived and could hold a (very!) basic conversation when I left. The kids were fascinated by my laptop, ipod, camera and mobile phone and became quite proficient at using them. (until one of the girls dropped my phone in a puddle and it hasnt worked since but these things happen!)

A typical day for me would be to get up around 6am and have a shower (cold, all water comes from the nearby stream!), then eat breakfast with the family. After breakfast I would walk to the school with the girls, where I would teach basic computing, or help another volunteer teach English. The school finishes for the day about 1pm, some days I would head up to Neds (he is known around the village as Eduardo) house and either watch DVDs or, more often, help with his eco tourism project, clearing pathways or other small projects. If I wasnt working in the school I might head out with the parents in my family to help milk the cows or help with other agricultural jobs.

People there usually go to bed around 7.30 pm, straight after the evening meal – if you dont like rice (or even if you do) you may never want to see another grain ever again its with just about every meal! The people there work very hard 7 days a week but it never felt like hard work it was more like fun! Of a Sunday everybody heads into town for shopping or recreation. Its also the only chance to get online or phone home, neither of these things are available in the rural communities. You would also need to get all your money in Otavalo as the facilities arent there in the Intag.

Safety. The village is very safe, I never encountered a single problem. This doesnt mean however you can just leave valuable things lying around because they MIGHT not be there when you get back! There are of course risks when travelling a foreign country but if you dont take silly risks you should be OK. There where young girls travelling when I was there who had no problems, including an 18 year old girl who was travelling South America alone who encountered no problems. There was however one young girl who was on the receiving end of some innapropriate behaviour from men on arrival in Quito but she was unhurt and this seemed to be a rarity as nobody else I met had this experience. I went there to help on the eco tourism project but there wasnt much to do – Ned is still trying to get the project off the ground and the wet weather limited what we could do so I started off working in the school, installing software on the school computer and helping another volunteer teach English. I also helped on various farms and homesteads and on one memorable day showed my (lack of) fitness helping to build a bridge! All in all, I would recomend a visit to Intagtours to anybody, even just for a week. Its a lovely, tranquil place with wonderful friendly locals! If you look on the cloud forest adventure website, and go to the blog you can read what other volunteers say, including 3 which I posted while I was there. Steve

My name is Kirsten, and I spent a month teaching English and living with a family in Rosario, Intag. If you are a prospective volunteer itching to learn Spanish, help a local community, live with a local family in the gorgeous scenery of the Northern Sierra region of Ecuador, and understand a very different way-of-life, then I believe this may just be the place! I originally arrived to Rosario to learn traditional farming methods, but was told the need for English teachers is a more productive slot for a volunteer to fill. I showed up on Monday morning, speaking a marginal amount of weak Spanish, and faced the 32-or-so children of Rosario with no prior teaching experience. Although certainly very challenging at times, I walked away from the whole experience very happy I decided to teach. The kids already knew quite a bit of English vocab, and what a wonderful finding!

Although a month of time may seem meager, it was in continuation of the wonderful job volunteers before me had started and cultivated. A month here and there has proved to make a sustainable impact on the children’s knowledge of English, and I know first-hand how grateful the parents are for their children to have the opportunity, something they certainly never had growing up. I am no great teacher by ANY means, and my Spanish was very poor upon arrival, but I learned just as much from the children as they did from me. They would spout out a word I didn’t know, and we’d play a little mini-game of charades trying to figure out what it was in English before I verified it in my little dictionary. After a month in Rosario, my Spanish improved SO MUCH more than I thought possible in a month! I am definitely not fluent, but in one month immersed in Spanish culture and teaching, I could communicate just about anything I wanted with proper verb conjugations and understood almost everything said to me. Wonderful!

But it wasn’t just the teaching that made my experience such a wonderful one. The people of Rosario, San Antonio and Cuellaje are just wonderful. I became great friends not only with my family but with a couple of others in Rosario and Cuellaje, people who cultivated my learning and holistic experience throughout my stay. I decided I was going to try to experience as much as possible while I was lucky enough to be there. My family didn’t have cows, but I really wanted to learn how to sacar la leche! So every morning I’d wake up an hour early to milk my neighbor’s cows. I would volunteer to run any and every errand with my host-mom, whether it be chopping wood for the stove with a machete, digging for camotes for the family pig who I grew to love as a pet!, harvesting tree tomatoes, planting beans, or hiking waaay up to their other land to spread seed where they wanted a particular plant to grow. I met a wonderful family who taught me how to weave a basket and kindly showed me their amazing waterfall! I speak of these experiences solely to say; if you choose to come to Intag to volunteer, make the most of it! I tried to experience everything I could with the wonderful people I was surrounded by, and I know my experience was so much richer because of it.

I want to especially thank Edwardo for being as courteous and wonderful as he could possibly be, welcoming us volunteers into the region with great advice and open arms. He made all of us feel extremely comfortable with the placement, and made it inherently clear that he was there for us if a problem was to ensue. I have been corresponding with several volunteer coordinators this summer, none as graceful and helpful as Edwardo, so thank you so very much for everything.

In short, Intag is a wonderful place, and the people that so kindly opened their homes and hearts to me I will never forget. I learned so very much, and I cherish my time there deeply!

I would love to be able to condense all my feelings and experiences of the past two months into a couple of lines to share with you the great impact that this trip has made on me, but it’s virtually impossible. I can say that the time has been short, but it has been so intense and full of wonderful moments I feel highly satisfied with my work as a teacher, especially in El Rosario. One of my biggest fears was not being able to help sufficiently, but in even six or seven weeks I can see the children beginning to shine in English, something that brings me great satisfaction. I sincerely hope that the wait will not be long before the children can have another teacher and that I can also encourage others back home to take up this worthy and rewarding challenge. I am ever so grateful to Intagtour for opening the door to this most beautiful world for me. Teresa
